CDLLIFE was able to connect with Saia LTL Freight in order to find out more about who they are.  We asked Saia a series of questions to help introduce themselves to prospective drivers. Here are the questions we asked and what Saia had to say.

Q:

In a paragraph or two, take some time and tell our readers a little bit about your company. In other words, who are you and what do you do?

Saia LTL Freight is a publicly held trucking company that offers customers a wide range of less-than-truckload, non-asset truckload, and logistic services. We began in 1924 when Louis Saia, Sr. a produce dealer in Houma, La., decided there was more to be made in delivering produce than selling it. Our first “truck” was the family car with the rear seats removed.

We’ve continued to grow since that day, first establishing terminals throughout Louisiana and Texas before growing to cover the U.S. with either direct coverage or through a network of partners that allow us to serve in the balance of the U.S. including Alaska and Hawaii, plus Mexico, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Through additional operating service groups including Saia Logistics Services and LinkEx, we provide complete transportation and logistics solutions.

Q:

In your mind, what makes your company unique from all of the other trucking companies that exist?

Our customer service really differentiates when it comes to comparing ourselves to the competition. As a customer, you won’t find a better company in terms of the people that serve them, from our drivers to our dockworkers to our customer support staff and sales team.

Q:

With there being so much competition between trucking companies for experienced drivers why should a prospective driver consider working for your company as opposed to all of the other trucking companies that are looking to hire drivers?

When we are hiring drivers, our goal is to make their job at Saia the only one they’ll have for the rest of their career. We want our drivers to remain with us until they retire. If you look at how we support our drivers, it’s clear that we’re serious about keeping our experienced drivers around. Whether it’s covering 100 percent of our driver’s insurance after 10 years of employment, offering countless opportunities to advance their career or equipping our truck fleet with the latest in safety and comfort technology, including Bose Easy Ride seats, we’re always looking to for ways to better the lives and careers of our drivers.

Q:

What can you tell our readers about the culture of your company?

As a company, Saia is dedicated to providing every employee the opportunity to grow and contribute, individually and as part of a team. We work to create an environment where employees have a positive attitude and enjoy what they do by maintaining open lines of communication between them and upper management. Our management teams are dedicated to understanding what our employees needs are by assessing their strengths as well as opportunities where they need improvement, and giving them the tools they need to succeed.

We also have a unique employee reward program called iSaia that allows managers, coworkers as well as customers to recognize employees for exemplary behaviors. It is a top priority for us to be sure employees are rewarded for their efforts and that they get the recognition they deserve.

 

Q:

Can you share with our reader’s some things that they may not know about you?

Some are surprised to learn that we’ve been around for 94 years. One thing that has kept us around that long is the way we treat our employees. The average tenure at Saia is eight years and we have over 300 employees that have been with the company for 20 years or longer.

Q:

Most of our readers are very aware of the turnover problem that exists within the trucking industry. Generally, what is your company’s thoughts on driver turnover and what is your company doing to reduce the turnover rate at your organization?

Offering opportunities for speedy advancement, strong pay, great benefits and use of innovative equipment are really key to reducing turnover, not just at Saia, but across the industry. Being a truck driver isn’t as simple as many people think. There’s a lot that goes into the job. It’s important to compensate and treat drivers accordingly – for the professionals they truly are.

Q:

What type of freight does your company haul?

We haul freight for hundreds of unique customers – everyone from nationally known big box stores to manufacturers to small single location retail businesses.

Q:

What’s the typical running area that your company operates in?

We operate in over 54,000 ZIP codes and in 36 states across the U.S.

Q:

As best as you can, can you summarize all of the different truck driving jobs that your company is hiring for?

We only have company drivers and there are two main driver types:

Local city drivers and linehaul drivers. Local city drivers perform pick-ups and deliveries in and near a city (such as Atlanta). They work Monday-Friday, are home daily and are off on weekends.

Linehaul drivers run terminal to terminal (for example from Atlanta to Charlotte). They are out at maximum a week, but can be home daily or every couple days depending on their run.

Q:

Can you provide our readers with general information about how your company compensates drivers that work for you?

The pay scales differ based on each market. On average, Local city drivers make $55,000-$65,000 annually and Linehaul drivers make $70,000-$80,000 on average annually. Local city drivers are paid hourly, with overtime paid after 45 hours per week (unless local law dictates otherwise) and Linehaul drivers are mostly paid by the mile.

What are your minimum hiring qualifications?

Must be at least 21 years old • Minimum of 12 months tractor-trailer driving experience • Safe driving record • Class A CDL License with HAZMAT, tanker and doubles endorsement
