CDLLIFE was able to connect with NKC Transportation in order to find out more about who they are. We asked NKC Transportation a series of questions to help introduce themselves to prospective drivers who may never of heard of them. Here are the questions we asked and what NKC had to say.
In a paragraph or two, take some time and tell our readers a little bit about your company. In other words, who are you and what do you do?
We are a long haul trucking company based out of Kansas City, Missouri. We haul dry van and reefer trailers in all 48 states except for the northwest.
In your mind, what makes your company unique from all of the other trucking companies that exist?
What makes our company unique is that we are a smaller family-owned and Christian oriented trucking company and the owner of the company used to be a driver himself.
With there being so much competition between trucking companies for experienced drivers why should a prospective driver consider working for your company as opposed to all of the other trucking companies that are looking to hire drivers?
This is a company founded by a driver for drivers. We keep things simple and are fair.
What can you tell our readers about the culture of your company?
Laid back. Separate from all the rest. Nice positive atmosphere.
Can you share with our readers some things that they may not know about you?
The owner of the company has been in the industry for 30 years. Other companies he owned were known by Chicago Express and Pro Fleet.
Most of our readers of very aware of the turnover problem that exists within the trucking industry. Generally, what is your company’s thoughts on driver turnover and what is your company doing to reduce the turnover rate at your organization?
NKC Transportation does their best to retain drivers by trying to make them feel connected and like they belong with the company.
We try to be as thorough as possible during the hiring process so the drivers know what to expect when they join our team. We take them out to a nice lunch during orientation and answer any questions they may have. And we make sure they have a chance to meet employees in every department so they know who to get a hold of when they need help with certain problems.
When all else fails they will also have the recruiter’s phone number who is the owner’s son and the owner’s phone number himself that they can call when they are having issues with miles, their dispatcher, or home time.
We have also just recently created a Facebook page for the company.
What type of freight does your company haul?
NKC Transportation hauls dry van and reefer freight to All 48 states except for the northwest. We haul mostly reefer freight for companies such as Tyson, Reser’s Fine Foods, John Morrell, Smithfield, Farmland, and Russell Stover’s candies
What’s the typical running area that your company operates in?
As best as you can, can you summarize all of the different truck driving jobs that your company is hiring for?
NKC is currently hiring owner operators, company drivers, and lease purchasers. Lease purchasers must be company drivers for at least 90 days before signing a lease purchase deal. We hire solo and team drivers for all driving positions. If someone wants to be a team driver they will need to already have that team driver themself.
Can you provide our readers with general information about how your company compensates drivers that work for you?
At NKC Transportation we pay drivers based on their experience and their driving record. Company drivers are paid by the mile and lease purchasers/owner ops are paid 73% of the line haul plus the fuel surcharge. What you put into it is what you get out of it. We have had drivers get 4000 miles in one week on electronic logs. We require each driver to run a minimum of 10,000 miles per month. The majority of our company drivers get paid at least $0.40 to the mile which would make their yearly earnings a minimum of $50,000.
What are your minimum hiring qualifications?
Each driver is looked at individually. We understand each applicant will be different from the others. We prefer to have drivers with a minimum of 2 years experience and a clean/mostly clean driving record. We have accepted drivers with felonies for example, but not all.
If a driver wants to get in touch with you who should they call and how do they apply?
Drivers can call the recruiting director Blake Marshall directly who is also the owner’s son at 417-840-0404. They can also call Brenda Johnson in the office at 816-994-2500 extension 5 for recruiting.
If there is any additional information that you would like to share with our audience of professional truck drivers?
What I have found out in my first year of recruiting is that 9 out of 10 trucking companies look at drivers as if they were just another number. I believe that drivers who come to work for us have more earning ability with our company than the larger thousands on a fleet trucking companies in the industry today. Not only can drivers make a good living working with NKC they can also enjoy the people they work with.
